Daniel: First of all it’s my strong believe that smart people get to do smart things. This also applies to wed photography, because it seems that all well known photographers have that light in their eyes. I saw some videos with you Jerry and you are remarkably charismatic on stage. You have little or no inhibitions when explaining things to others. What drives you? How did you become such a good and relaxed speaker? What is your background in this regard? Would you recommend being smart first and wed photographer second? Or does it really matter?

Nu ai deloc inhibitii in a explica altora cum stau lucrurile.

Jerry: Like anything, practice makes perfect.  I have been teaching and speaking publicly for 12 years now and the key to communicating effectively is mastering your craft, the confidence to share it and the ability to communicate in a tangible and entertaining way.  I am a naturally competitive person so whatever I choose to embark on, I usually put 100% effort into it.  I believe you should focus as much, if not more, on the business rather than on the creative elements of photography. Don’t judge your success based on other photographers’ successes. Focus on being the best version of yourself.  But remembering that you don’t have to be the best, you just have to be better than last week.

Concentreaza-te in a deveni cea mai buna versiune a ta.

Daniel: Are you happy being a wed photographer? How much time do you currently devote to working as a wedding photographer and how much to educating others?

Jerry: I love wedding photography and I believe it’s arguably the hardest genre of photography to master, but also the most rewarding.  Melissa and I shoot up to 20 weddings each year and several portrait and fashion assignments as well.  We currently live in Melbourne, Australia and in Beverly Hills, CA and we spend approximately four months in each city and then another four months travelling abroad for weddings and speaking engagements.

Daniel: If you were The God of wedding photography, what would you change in your believers’ approach to wed photography?

RO: Daca ai fi 'Dumnezeul' fotografiei de nunta, ce ai schimba in abordarea 'credinciosilor tai' in privinta fotografiei de nunta?

Jerry: Success in wedding photography and especially in performing on the wedding day is more about your communication skills and your listening skills and knowing how to read people.  That will go a long way in making you a great photographer rather than focusing on how technically brilliant you are. The ability to have an endearing and attractive personality and the ability to work under pressure while still being technically proficient is especially important.  You almost need to be like a chameleon. In the sense that you need to know how to be relaxed and more down to earth at a casual wedding and at the same time be able to carry yourself professionally when you’re at a high society wedding.

I also believe that assisting at weddings is the best training for any photographer. At the very first wedding that I assisted, I probably learned more than in all of the time I spent in school.  And that was because I was getting on the job, real world training.  At that first wedding I was taught about the direction of light, how to use flash, interacting with clients, working under pressure, working under time constraints.  I literally just carried bags and assisted a photographer for a year and half with no pay while I was working at a camera store selling cameras.  I did all of that just so I could be involved in the industry.  And that’s because when you’re photographing a wedding, you’re actually shooting much more than that. You’re shooting a wedding, portraits and fashion, you’re shooting photojournalistically, shooting product (all the details that you need to document), landscape, etc.  So you’re photographing in all these different genres and under time constraints, weather constraints, different cultures and dealing with different personalities, so I truly believe that a really good wedding photographer can pretty much shoot in any genre.  Artistically, don’t be safe or stay in your comfort zone by going to “pose number 23 in location number 37”.  Comfort zones have never been synonymous with artistic expression.

I encourage new photographers to be as passionate about their business as they are about their photography. Consider yourself a businessperson first who happens to be a photographer.  As a business owner ask yourself, “Am I working in my business or on my business?”  Surround yourself with great people - your studio is only four walls without good staff. Stop being a control freak and get some help.  Educate yourself.  Seminar and workshops can literally change your life.  After all, knowledge is power.  Don’t be too precious about the work.

When it comes to marketing your new business, you should work on marketing that costs you nothing by first asking your clients and vendors for referrals and maximizing relationships with people who can help you.  Also, try a same day slide show at the reception.  It’s the best direct marketing you will ever do and you can also charge good money for it. If you are going to invest in advertising, don’t think about the advertising dollars you are parting with and think instead about the return. Whenever an advertising opportunity presents itself ask yourself, “Is there a better way I can spend this money?” And finally, don’t forget to consider yourself a brand.  Build it and they will come.

One of my favorite mantras has always been that I don’t focus on being the best; I just focus on being better than last week.  I believe this is one of the keys to being successful and consistently creating beautiful images.  By doing that, you become the best that you can be – you realize your own potential.

Daniel:
Let’s say you are alone in a room with the most beautiful woman and you’re not married. Would you talk to her about posing or lighting first? What would your approach be?

Jerry: Oh! Well...

Daniel: Does your continuous development come from within you or does  your circle of close friends drive you forward? How can someone recreate the environment for the birth of a new Ghionis?

Jerry:  I am naturally a very driven and motivated person.  And I’m as passionate about bringing the best in myself as I am about bringing it out in others.  I believe a photographer is as good as their last image so complacency does not exist in my psyche.  If you want to be like the greats, be yourself.

RO: Sunt o fire foarte motivata. Daca vrei sa fii asemenea celor mari, trebuie sa fii tu insuti.

Daniel: Is there a competition between you and the other famous Ghionis? Have you split the world in terms of influence? It seems like it from here.

Ati impartit lumea in zone de influenta? Asa pare de aici.

Jerry:  My brother and I have the utmost love and respect for each other as family, individuals and artists.

RO: Si eu si fratele meu avem doar respect si dragoste unul pentru altul, atat ca frati cat si ca artisti.

Daniel: Can you describe your daily average schedule? When do you wake up? How late are you staying up? How much time do you devote to family?

RO: Cum ai drescrie programul unei zile obisnuite? Cand te trezesti? Adormi tarziu? Cat timp dedici familiei?

Jerry
My life does not revolve around routine.  When I do have the opportunity to be at home in Beverly Hills or in Melbourne, I devote a reasonable amount of time to work but realize that without time, health, happiness and family life is nothing.

Daniel: What is the Ghionis way of creating a shot?

  1. Talk, talk, talk, shoot
  2. Think, talk, shoot
  3. Talk, shoot, think, reshoot
  4. Shoot, shoot, shoot.
  5. Not always the same steps
  6. Other steps involved. Which ones?
  7. Don’t know, I’m not answering this one

Gandeste, vorbeste, fotografiaza; 2. Vorbeste, fotografiaza, gandeste, re-fotografiaza; 3. Fotografiaza, fotografiaza, fotografiaza; 4. De fiecare data e altfel; 5. Alte etape sunt implicate; 6. Nu stiu, nu raspund la intrebarea asta.

Jerry:  There are five steps to a powerful image in my opinion and they are:

  1. I look for the direction of light first;
  2. I look for a complimentary background or location;
  3. I think of a concept, action or pose for my subjects;
  4. {this is also when I finally pick up my camera} I work out my technique – exposure, composition, etc...;
  5. I finesse my image and refine my posing but evoking emotion and expression will mean the difference between photographing a moment rather than a pose.

RO: Exista cinci pasi catre o imagine puternica: 1. Ma uit dupa directia luminii. 2. Caut un background potrivit; 3. Gandesc un concept, actiune sau posing; 4. Stabilesc parametrii tehnici (expunere, compozitie) - acum iau camera in mana; 5.

Daniel:
Name three people that made you what you are. Don’t include parents.

RO: Spune-mi trei oameni care te-au definit. Fara parinti.

Jerry Apart from the obvious influence of family and friends, the people who are responsible for the person I am today is the person I was and the person I wanted to be.  My wife, Melissa, has really brought out the best in me like no other.  She’s made me believe in love and truly makes me want to be a better person.  The value she gives me as a person has truly made me a better photographer, business person and teacher.

Daniel: In terms of finances, can you afford anything you want right now? Is Ghionis wed photography a successful business for you? Would you want a Porsche?

RO: In termeni financiari, iti permiti tot ce vrei?

Jerry:  Wedding photography as a business has been very successful for me.  The harder I work, the more “blessed” I am :)

Daniel:  Are you Photoshop addicted? Or do you just shoot and let others finish up?

Jerry:  I don’t know how to Photoshop, but I know how to pay someone else to do it for me.

Daniel: Can you show us the one photo of you that you love the most? Who took/made it?

Cine a facut-o?

Jerry I have always been more comfortable behind the camera.  But photographing myself with my bride, Melissa, in the mirror would have to be some of the special images to me.

RO: M-am simtit intotdeauna mai bine in spatele camerei.

Daniel: Would you feel that being a member of professional associations is worth it? Or is it just a waste of time?

RO: Crezi ca merita sa fii membru intr-o comunitate profesionala? Sau e doar pierdere de timp?

Jerry I would not be where I am today without the support, platform and mutual inspiration that I found through professional associations in our industry.

RO: Nu as fi astazi ceea ce sunt fara sustinerea si inspiratia reciproca oferita in interiorul comunitatilor profesionale ale industriei noastre.

Daniel:
Do you agree or disagree with the following?

  1. I’m a success addict
  2. I think I’m the best in wed photography
  3. Karl Lagerfeld is the best fashion photographer
  4. Romanian wedding photographers are among the best in the world
  5. The best image in my portfolio was pure luck.

Jerry:

  1. It depends on what your version of success is.  I am addicted to a healthy balanced life.
  2. No.  There is no such thing as the best in a creative field.  It is all subjective.
  3. See answer to #2.  By the way I think he is a better designer than he is a photographer.
  4. I haven’t been exposed to many Romanian photographers although every country has many jewels to their crown.
  5. Definitely no.  In fact, I photography my favourite image several months ago and it took my about 15-20 minutes to create it.

RO: 1. Nu am cunoscut multi fotografi romani, desi fiecare tara are multe nestemate in coroana; 5.

Daniel: Let’s imagine the following: photo session, harsh mid-‐day light, incredible hot, ugly bride, bored groom, dirt poor photographer, dust all around, below average equipment, bank loan overdue. The name of the photographer is Nicu. If you were Nicu, what would you do right there? And on the long term? (and please don’t say: get a real job).

Daca ai fi Nicu, ce ai face in acel moment? Dar pe termen lung? Si, te rog, nu spune: angajeaza-te!

Jerry:  I’d say fulfill your current commitment to the best of your ability.  Overall, take what you do seriously, educate yourself and your clients for a more professional approach and execution.

Daniel:
If you have to choose between a skillful Photoshop artist/average photographer and a great-‐inspired photographer/poor photoshoper, whom would you choose as your wedding photographer?

Jerry:  I would always choose the better photographer.

RO:Voi alege intotdeauna fotograful mai bun.

Daniel: What magazines are you reading for your inspiration? Websites?

RO: Ce reviste te inspira? Website-uri?

Jerry I have been obsessed with magazines for the ipad lately.  I subscribe to Vanity Fair, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and V magazine.  Music and cinema provide me with my other sources of inspiration.

Daniel: Can you share with us your best line (words) when posing a couple? And worst?

RO: Spune-mi cea mai buna replica atunci cand realizezi posing-ul unui cuplu. Si cea mai neinspirata.

Jerry: “Pretend to be happy.” That can be the best and the worst.  But probably the worst line could actually be from a guest who looked at the back of my camera. “That’s a beautiful photograph.  You must have a fantastic camera.”

RO: 'Simuleaza fericirea!'

Daniel: What makes a wedding image outstanding? (the three most important characteristics).

Jerry:  Impeccable lighting and posing are the most important technical elements to a photograph. Story and emotion are probably the second most important element.  And the third is the “wow” factor – memorability.

Daniel: What makes a wedding photographer successful? (also three).

RO: Cum definesti succesul fotografului de nunta?

Jerry:  Commitment to craft; understanding of business and profitability; time to reap and enjoy the rewards.

Daniel: Can Jerry Ghionis be more successful than he already is?

RO:Ar putea avea Jerry Ghionis un succes mai mare decat are deja?

Jerry:  It depends on what one’s version of success is.  No one has the ability to ever reach their peak.  There is always room for improvement, balance and profit.

Daniel: Ok, now I’m going to ask you: What f-‐stop do you use the most and what lens? Scratch that. What is your opinion regarding the future of our line of work?

Glumesc. Ce parere ai despre viitorul meseriei noastre?

Jerry Unfortunately, I believe the wedding market is shrinking. I often hear the words “adapt or die” and they certainly ring true.  More couples will only want digital files and unfortunately the number of photographers who don’t respect the craft will increase. All that being said, there will always be a market for well crafted photography and a great experience.

Daniel: What does it take to be a Romanian Jerry Ghionis? (I’m interested in this one; I want to become Jerry tomorrow).

Jerry: Jerry Ghionis applying for citizenship in Romania.  LOL

Daniel: It is a true honor to learn from your experience. Thank you once again for this interview.
